Edna Brewer Middle School defeated Montera 28-14 on Saturday at the Warriors’ Basketball Academy in Oakland to capture the Oakland Athletic League championship.
Nailah Davis scored nine first-quarter points for Brewer, which led 13-7 after the period. Davis finished with 14 points and credited her strong play to “a lot of conditioning, a lot of practice” throughout the season. “We just get better.”
“It feels great,” said Edna Brewer coach Corin Yamasaki, whose team won its second OAL title in a row. “We really struggled with attitude when we were down (earlier this season) and when the girls were not playing to their expectations. So that was something that we really worked on this year.”
Yamasaki credited Davis’ toughness in leading the team to the title.
“Nailah Davis did amazing,” the coach said. “She's a hard player; she has a great attitude.”
The title game was held at the Warriors’ Basketball Academy in Oakland. The Warriors and Rakuten showed their support for Oakland girls basketball by announcing at halftime a free week of basketball camp for players on girls middle school teams in Oakland. The girls received custom Warriors jerseys.
