Oakland Tech captain's thrilling goals decide CIF Oakland Section girls soccer title
LPS Hayward defeats Skyline High for boys soccer crown
Nina Fitzgerald Boes addressed the decisive penalty kick, with High Street’s traffic lights flashing beyond the goal mouth and a CIF Oakland Section girls soccer title in the balance.
The Oakland Tech captain then concluded 100-plus minutes of soccer suspense Friday night at Fremont High against LPS Hayward – a shivering, grueling and ultimately electrifying match that Fitzgerald Boes extended with a goal late in extra time. In the eighth round of penalty kicks, the senior found the net again before jumping into a sea of Oakland Tech teammates.
“I was really glad to finish it off this year,” said Fitzgerald Boes, who has taken penalty kicks for Tech since a junior season that ended in a title-match loss to LPS Hayward. “I’m so happy.”
LPS Hayward’s Ashley Cienega, with eight minutes left in extra time, broke nearly 100 minutes of scoreless soccer. Oakland Tech’s championship hopes were ticking away when a ricochet in the goal box found the right foot of Fitzgerald Boes, who struck the ball into the top-left corner of the goal.
Boys final: LPS Hayward defeated Skyline High School 3-1 to capture the CIF Oakland Section boys soccer championship, with goals from Irvin Ramirez, Hector Cienega and Christopher Sanchez. Lev Jenzeh scored Skyline’s goal.
