Oakland Tech wins cross country section titles
Chloe Leduc and Miles Jones capture individual crowns for Bulldogs
Oakland Tech won the CIF Oakland Section girls and boys team cross country championships Wednesday at Lake Chabot.
The Bulldogs also swept individual titles: freshman Chloe Leduc won the girls race in 21 minutes, 7.08 seconds; and junior Miles Jones took the boys title in 16:54.76.
The three-lap, 5,000-meter race traversed the Lake Chabot par-3 golf course. Runners started on the ninth fairway, circled the ninth green, ascended a hill to the eighth tee box and circled the seventh-hole ravine before descending the second fairway to the final straightaway. The top eight individual finishers advance to the CIF State Cross Country Championships on Nov. 26 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Tech’s after-school training ascends Broadway Terrace to Lake Temescal, and back to the Broadway campus. Jones said the sessions prepared him for the steep climbs of the Section course. Leduc began running competitively in the fifth grade, and her experience — though just a freshman — showed in winning by more than one minute.
“I wanted to push myself mentally throughout the race,” Leduc said. “Pretend like someone was behind me and keep pushing.”
